You may be asking yourself: Isn’t hummus (houmous/humos/hommos) already vegan? For the most part, yes, but many of the most popular recipes call for yoghurt. The reason for the use of plain yoghurt in a hummus recipe is it helps make it smoother and elevates the savory taste. Well, this Smooth Vegan Hummus Recipe is a great alternative to preserve the savory taste, keep the creamy texture, and enjoy the deliciousness that is hummus!
Hummus – A Perfect Snack
Smooth Vegan Hummus can be combined with pita bread, bagel chips, veggies, or pretzels and is a great snack food for almost any occasion. It is light, healthy, and delicious. It can be eaten with toast as a spread or used as a dip but I like it best with Lebanese salad, vegetables, pasta, kabobs, lamb chops, rotini crabs, and shrimp. You can make endless combinations and surprise your guests just like me. My favorite combination is hummus with tabouli!
This hummus has been my favorite savory side dish for feasts at my place and has always been a hit! I love plating it because there are so many beautiful ways to serve and garnish it!
Ingredients
- 3 cups cooked chickpeas drained
- 1 cup tahini paste
- 2 large lemon juice
- 2 garlic cloves
- 1/2 cup ice cubes
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt
How to make Smooth Vegan Hummus Recipe
The time needed to make this hummus is just 20 minutes.
- Soften those chickpeas
When using organic dry chickpeas, you really must ensure softness. The chickpeas I used in this recipe were cooked in an instant pot for an hour! For 3 cups of chickpeas, add 6 cups of water and set for 1 hour. If your boiling on the stovetop you may need anywhere from two to four hours to ensure softness.
2. Make the Puree
3. Garnish
Take out the paste in a bowl, add salt n lemon as per taste. For garnishing, you can use chopped parsley, paprika, chopped olives, pine nuts, or roasted red bell pepper.
Tips to remember
A great tip is to soak dry chickpeas from the night before. Also, add a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate to the water you’ll be soaking the chickpeas in and mix it well. This will help save some cooking time.
Can I use canned chickpeas? If this question is wandering in your mind, the answer to it is yes! Yes .. you can! It is no different.
Looking for added flavors? Add two extra garlic cloves or a little more lemon juice. You can even sprinkle chili flakes, paprika, cayenne pepper, or cumin on top of the hummus spread before serving.
For Tahini, I use Al Kanater Tahini, it will give you a perfect consistency and creaminess.
Furthermore, a way to make Hummus fluffy is by adding 2 ice cubes while blending. Don’t rush when you are blending. Make the blending time around 3-5 minutes.
Where Can I Find Tahini Paste?
You can find Tahini Paste or sesame paste in a local market, especially a Middle Eastern one. If not, you can easily find them online through Amazon or online Middle Eastern markets.
Variations of Hummus
Though you can have variations of your choice, for example, some people even use peanut butter instead of Tahini. Similarly other variations could be
- Avocado Hummus
- Pine nuts and Parsley Hummus
- Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Basil
- Tuna Hummus
- Spinach Hummus
- Fig Hummus and many others
This is one of the best, authentic, smooth, ultra-creamy, and easy hummus recipes you will make! Save this one because it’s a crowd pleaser with it’s delicious taste and the fact that it’s vegan so you won’t have any worries for those on special diets or have dairy allergies.
