How to Peel, Grate, and Chop Fresh Ginger

Some recipes call for peeled, grated, chopped, or minced ginger. Here are some easy steps to get ginger ready for your favorite dish or drink.

How to peel ginger

  • Wash ginger to clean the dirt and chemicals.
  • Set the ginger on a cutting board. Then, scrape away the skin using an old spoon with dull edge.

How to slice ginger

  • Make sure the knob of ginger is clean. Peel it if desired.
  • Place ginger on the cutting board and cut the knobs into thin slices.

How to chop ginger

  • Wash the ginger thoroughly and peel it first if you desire.
  • On the cutting board, slice each knob into rounds. Place them one on top of the other and then cut them into fine strips.
  • Chop across the thin strips to make fine squares.

How to mince ginger

  • Repeat the same steps required to chop the ginger.
  • Make sure you form fine slices, fine strips, and extra tiny squares.

How to grate ginger

  • Wash the ginger and peel it if you desire.
  • Get a box grater, a fine hand grater, or a Microplane.
  • Hold the knob of ginger, press it down, and grate.
  • Turn the grater backward and use the spoon to collect the grated ginger.

How to make ginger paste

  • Wash, peel, and cut ginger into small pieces.
  • Place pieces in the food processor.
  • Pulse until it becomes a paste with the consistency you desire.

Notes

#1: If you are planning to grate ginger root, place it in the freezer for some time till it becomes hard. The extra firm texture will make it easier to grate the ginger.
#2: Do not thaw ginger root after freezing it. It will become soggy and watery.
#3: If you like to prepare and store ingredients ahead of time, you can peel, grate, chop, or slice ginger. Then, you place it in an airtight container in the freezer. Ginger can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.
#4: If you do not use all the ginger knobs, use plastic wrap to cover the unused part. 
#5: After you peel the skin of the ginger, you can add it to your tea kettle especially if it has some flesh.
