Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons Butter salted
  • 4 tablespoons Flour
  • 3 cups Broth beef turkey or chicken (substitute with 3 cups water if you don't have broth)
  • 1 4 oz can cut mushrooms drained
  • 1 Bouillon cube (If using water instead of broth)
  • teaspoon Seven spices optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Add the butter or pan drippings from the beef, chicken, or turkey to a medium pot.
  • Melt butter over medium heat. Gently stir as you add the flour one tablespoon at a time and keep whisking to create a roux.
  • Slowly pour in the stock as you stir, one cup at a time to prevent lumps. The stock can come directly from the beef, chicken, or turkey drippings or store-bought ready stock will work. (If you don't have broth you can use water instead and use 1 bouillon cube. )
  • Drain the mushroom and add to the pot, add in the salt and pepper and seven spices are optional.
  • Stir constantly over medium heat until gravy thickens well. You can add additional broth if it gets too thick and you want it looser.

Notes

  • Sift the Flour: Make sure to sift the flour before adding it to the melted butter for a lump-free gravy. This helps distribute the flour more evenly and makes it easier to whisk into a smooth mixture.
  • Pour Broth Gradually: It is very important to pour the broth in gradually, about a cup at a time, while continuously whisking. This helps prevent lumps and ensures the gravy thickens evenly.
  • Season at the End: Add salt and pepper at the end of the cooking process. This allows you to adjust the seasoning accurately, especially if you’re using a salty broth.
  • Adjust Consistency: If your gravy is too thick, gradually add in additional broth until you reach the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, let it simmer a bit longer to thicken, or mix a small amount of flour with cold water and whisk it in.
  • Substitute: If you don't have broth on hand you can still make gravy.  Just substitute the broth with water and add 1 bouillon cube
