Blackening the Mahi Mahi Fish

It’s no secret that there are two essential components to creating a blackened mahi mahi. First, it has to do with the “black spice” combination used to help create the dark color. Second, it’s in how we cook the fish!

Make sure you mix the dry spices together in a small bowl before using them to coat the fish on both sides. One of the common ingredients used in the spice mix recipe that helps blacken the fish is brown sugar. It helps give the fish a darker look because the brown sugar caramelizes.

Next is cooking the fish. I use olive oil in the coating process which helps get that black outer crust you want on the fish. Other important ingredients to create the blackened look are using butter or ghee, cooking sprays, or other oils like canola, sunflower, coconut, or your other favorites for searing. Keep in mind, the differing oils will alter the flavor of your fish slightly.

A few other important cooking tricks include preheating your pan or skillet. Keep a close eye on your piece of cooking fish because mahi mahi can dry out fast if you’re not careful. Also, you can press the fish with your spatula onto the pan while its cooking to help give it the blackened crust on the outside.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long can we freeze Mahi Mahi?

Although any fish is best eaten fresh, you can absolutely pop your Mahi Mahi in the freezer to be enjoyed at a later time. If properly stored, the fish will maintain its quality for about 6 months. Just make sure you keep it frozen at all times.

What’s the best way to defrost frozen fish?

Defrosting frozen food items can be a bit tricky. You want to enjoy your well-deserved meal without ruining the main ingredients. In order to thaw your frozen Mahi Mahi, simply place your fish in sealable plastic bag. Then, place the bag in cold water under a running tab until it is fully defrosted. The time of the process would depend on the size and quantity.

Is it safe to meal prep fish?

Absolutely! As long as you are using appropriate meal prep containers, you can store your fish and enjoy it throughout the week. But tread carefully with this one, because unlike other protein it is quite delicate and should be enjoyed a bit quicker.

Process:

  1. Drizzle some olive oil on the filets, and rub on both sides. Then, rub the blackened spice mix on both sides to evenly coat the filet with the spicy mix.
  2. Place a large skillet on high heat for about 2 minutes, then bring it back to medium low heat.
  3. Add 1/4 cup of olive oil into the pan, then place the Mahi Mahi filets for 2 minutes on each side or until cooked. Add 1 tablespoon of butter before flipping your fish. Move the pan around a little so that the butter seeps through the filets.
  4. Remove the filets and set aside.
  5. Heat the mini tortillas for a few minutes on a clean skillet.
  6. Assemble the cooked Mahi Mahi in the soft tortilla, then add toppings of choice like mango, avocado, red onions, and cilantro.
  7. Drizzle some Mahi sauce on top!
