Sea moss gel should be kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container. When refrigerated, it can last up to 3 weeks. Sea moss gel should not be stored in pantries or at room temperature because it will spoil. Only raw, dried sea moss can be stored in a sealed bag at room temperature. It usually lasts up to a year.

Can you eat sea moss gel by itself?

  • Make sure you have a clean, airtight storage container.
  • Once you’ve made the gel (using either of these methods), store it in a clean container with a lid in the fridge. After about 2 hours, a gel will form.
  • The gel will keep in the fridge for about 3-4weeks. If you make too much, you can freeze it and it will keep for up to 3-4 months.
  • A typical daily serving is 1-2 tablespoons of the gel, but experiment to see what works best for you.
  • You can boost your sea moss gel by adding some drops alkaline water.
  • You need a very good blender to make your sea moss gel smooth. I use my Vitamix which blends it perfectly. When you first blend the sea moss, it may appear runny, but when you put it in the fridge, it will thicken.

2 Ways to Make Sea Moss Gel

Make your own Irish Moss gel at home using one of these two tried and tested methods: simmer sea moss or soak overnight.

Sea Moss Gel Ingredients

  • Sea moss raw seaweed
  • spring water/filtered water

Soak Overnight

This method takes a little longer, but it’s worth it if you prefer raw foods because it preserves nutrients better than heat.

First, place a cup of cleaned sea moss in a bowl and cover with enough filtered/spring water to completely submerge the seaweed (a little extra on top as the seaweed will expand and absorb the water). Cover and set aside for 12 to 24 hours.

The seaweed will expand and absorb water as it soaks. It feels gooey and slippery when you touch it.

Use this mixture as is after soaking, or blend with a blender until smooth. You don’t have to throw away any of the water the moss has been soaking in; instead, strain the solids through a sieve to remove any undissolved fragments. If necessary, scrape the sieve with a spoon. I personally use fresh new reverse osmosis water.

Transfer to a clean jar or mold to set.

If you don’t want to use it in your gel, apply it to your skin or add it to your house plants.


Simmer Sea Moss

If you don’t like to consume raw sea moss, try this method:

Combine one cup of cleaned Irish moss (or less if you want a soft set) with two cups of filtered/spring water.

Gently simmer until most of the seaweed has dissolved (20 -25 minutes). Do not bring to a boil.

Blend until smooth with a blender, or strain the solids through a sieve to remove any undissolved fragments. If necessary, scrape the sieve with a spoon.

To set, pour the gel into a clean jar or mold.

Equipment

  • clean mason jar or airtight container
  • Blender

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup raw sea moss
  • 2 cups spring water

Instructions 

  • First, place a cup of raw wild crafted sea moss in a medium bowl and repeatedly rinse the sea moss, about 4 times.
  • cover with enough reverse osmosis filtered or spring water to completely submerge the seaweed (a little extra on top as the seaweed will expand and absorb the water). Cover and set aside for 12 to 24 hours in the refrigerator.
  • The seaweed will expand and absorb water as it soaks. It feels gooey and slippery when you touch it.
  • After soaking place the soaked and drained sea moss in high-speed blender with 2 cups of spring water or reverse osmosis water and blend until smooth. You can add 5-7 pieces of pitted dates to add some sweetness and taste if you choose to.
  • Transfer to a clean jar or air tight container and refrigerate. Sea moss gel can last in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks and up to 4 months in the freezer.
