I had so much fun making this yummy treat with my young girls. We made an afternoon of it!

We were all craving a sweet frozen treat and I thought to myself: What do I have on hand that we could use to create a fun and easy ice cream cake?

Well, I opened my pantry and there was a pack of double-stuffed Oreos staring right back at me! So, I pulled them out onto the counter and asked the girls what they thought of an Oreo ice cream cake. They were super excited!

Kid-Friendly– What kid doesn’t love ice cream? Or Oreos? So, a treat that combines both is just dessert heaven for the kiddos.

My favorite part is enjoying a great summertime activity with my kids! Get your kids in the kitchen helping you out in putting this no-bake dessert dish together!

Easy to Make– With a mere three ingredients, this Oreo Ice Cream Cake is super easy to make. Also, you likely have the ingredients on hand or can easily grab or order them from your local grocery store.

Quick Prep– It’s very quick to put together. In a mere 3 or 4 simple steps, your cake will be ready for the freezer.

The longer part of the preparation is freezing it. How long it needs in the freezer depends on how soft your ice cream is.

Versatile– You can prepare this dessert to your liking. You can use non-dairy ice cream for example. If you don’t like Oreos, you can use your favorite cookies instead.

You can also switch up the ice cream flavor if you don’t want to use plain vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

You can serve this homemade ice cream cake at parties, family barbecues, or potlucks. You can decorate the cake according to the occasion. It is not only for summer birthday cakes. Many enjoy an ice cream dessert any season!

Decorating the cake is the best part. Depending on the occasion, you can add whatever decorations or toppings. You can top it with whipped cream, caramel, sprinkles, or half cookies.

For chocolate lovers, you can add chocolate syrup, chocolate fudge, chocolate sauce, or chocolate chips.

Tips for Making the Best Oreo Ice Cream Cake

You can choose to remove the cream from inside the Oreos before crushing. This means you would need to add butter to the crushed cookies to get them to hold well together.

You can then use the cream to decorate the top by melting them in a pan and pouring it over the top.

If you would like thicker ice cream layer, you may want to use 2 pints of each kind instead of my recommended 1 pint. You can also mix ice cream with Cool Whip.

Use any ice cream flavors you like with a special recommendation on using mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Place the cake for about 10-15 minutes on the counter and let it set at room temperature or 30 minutes in the fridge before serving to thaw a bit so you can easily slice it up and serve it.

Use a serrated butter knife for cleaner slices when cutting. The best way is to dip it in hot water so it will cut through the cake to shape a beautiful slice.

If your cake isn’t decorated, it lasts up to 2 months in the freezer. In general, it is best served within 5 to 7 days of its preparation.

The easiest way to get an even layer of softened ice cream is to use saran paper to level it off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should the ice cream be left to thaw before adding to the cake?

It’s best that the ice cream not left out too long or it will become runny. The ice cream should be soft enough to easily scoop out and spread over the cookie mixture.

How long should the cake be frozen before serving?

This really depends on how soft or melted the ice cream in the cake is before serving. It can be anywhere from one to two hours.

Do I need butter to keep the cookie mixture together?

I used double-stuffed Oreos, so the cream inside was enough to get the mixture thick. If you’re using regular Oreos, you may want to add a three or four tablespoons of melted butter.

How long can an Oreo Ice Cream Cake be stored?

Packed well in an airtight container, the cake can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months if there is no whip cream, eggs, or decorations. Wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container when freezing for a fresher taste.

What is the best way to crush Oreo cookies?

Crushed Oreos will make the first layer of the cake at the bottom of the pan. You can place your Oreos in a food processor. You can also go old school and put them in a gallon size freezer bag or zip lock bag then whack them with a rolling pin.

Easy Oreo Ice Cream Cake

Servings: 10 people

Ingredients 

  • 1 pack double stuffed Oreos
  • 1 pint vanilla ice cream
  • 1 pint chocolate ice cream
  • sprinkles

Instructions 

  • Crush the Oreos in a bowl or in a zip lock bag until they are fine and sticky.
  • Place ¾ of the crushed Oreos on the bottom of a springform pan pressing down tightly.
  • Place 1 pint of softened vanilla ice cream. 
  • Place a piece of saran wrap covering the ice cream using your hands and flatten it down so that it is leveled.
  • Now, add the pint of softened chocolate ice cream. 
  • Again, please use a piece of saran wrap on top of the ice cream so you can level it off. 
  • Garnish with the remaining crushed Oreos and sprinkles of your choice.  Freeze for about two hours before enjoying.
