Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

How do I cook vermicelli noodles for stir-fry?

To cook vermicelli noodles, bring a pot of water to a boil, then remove it from the heat and add the noodles. Let them soak for about 3–5 minutes until they become tender but still slightly firm. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process.

Do I need a wok to make shrimp stir-fry?

While a wok is traditional and can distribute heat more evenly, you can still make a delicious stir fry in a large, deep skillet or frying pan.

Can I use different vegetables in my stir-fry?

Absolutely! Feel free to customize your stir fry with your favorite vegetables. Common choices include bell peppers, broccoli, snow peas, carrots, and mushrooms.

Can I make shrimp stir fry ahead of time?

While it’s best enjoyed fresh, you can make some components in advance, like prepping the vegetables or marinating the shrimp. However, it’s ideal to cook and assemble the dish just before serving to maintain the best texture and flavor.

Top Tips

Pro Tip #1: To ensure your cooked shrimp remains tender, add it during the final step of the recipe. This way, it won’t become overcooked and rubbery.

Pro Tip #2: Opt for raw shrimp to achieve perfectly cooked shrimp without the risk of overcooking. While sautéing the vegetables, add the raw shrimp to the pan and cook them for approximately 4-6 minutes.

This method ensures that your shrimp will reach the ideal level of doneness. Remember that the shrimp will continue to cook during the final minute after the soy sauce is added.

Pro Tip #3: If you don’t like shrimp, sliced or diced chicken breast or thigh meat is a common choice for stir fry. It cooks quickly and absorbs the flavors of the sauce and aromatics well.

Also, thinly sliced beef, such as flank steak or sirloin, is another excellent option. It adds a savory richness to the dish.

Pro Tip #4: If you don’t like vermicelli noodles, you can serve shrimp stir-fry with rice. The rice serves as a perfect base to soak up the flavorful sauce from the stir-fry and provides a satisfying and filling meal.

Pro Tip #5: Vermicelli noodles cook quickly, usually within a few minutes. Follow the package directions, and make sure to rinse them with cold water after cooking to stop the cooking process and keep them from sticking together.

Pro Tip #5: You can use arrowroot starch as a substitute for cornstarch in the shrimp stir-fry sauce. Arrowroot starch is a gluten-free, grain-free, and paleo-friendly thickening agent. It has a neutral flavor and works well in sauces and stir-fries to give them a glossy, silky texture.
