How to Know that Celery is Spoiled?

To know if the celery has been spoiled, monitor the following signs:

The Color

Fresh celery has green leaves and light green and white stems. One of the most important rotting signs is when the stems become brown in color, and black spots develop on leaves that turn yellow color.

The Smell

When food emits a bad smell, that means it is no longer good. If the celery gives off a foul smell, then, for sure it’s not safe for consumption.

The Texture

Fresh celery has firm, crunchy, and rigid stalks. When the leaves have a limp texture and the stem feels soft, this is a sign that the celery is no longer fresh.

The Taste

Fresh celery has a slightly salty and bitter taste. However, spoiled celery has a too-bitter taste with no other taste you can distinguish.

Keeping Celery Fresh

Fresh celery lasts well for up to 1 to 2 weeks. To keep celery fresh, there are many different ways to store it to maintain its nutrients and flavor.

For Storing Celery, You Will Need:

  • Celery
  • Plastic wrap
  • A glass bowl

How to Store Celery in Water?

For me, storing celery in water is the best way to keep it fresh. Here are the simple steps you have to follow to keep your celery fresh and crunchy.

First, remove the stalks from the base of the celery.

Second, eliminate the leaves from the celery stalks.

Now, fill a glass bowl or a mason jar with fresh water.

After that, submerge the celery sticks in fresh water. Pay attention to leaving one inch of space between the top of the bowl and the celery.

Then, seal the lid of the bowl or close it with plastic wrap.

Finally, place the celery bowl in the refrigerator.

Note:

  • Cold water helps lock in moisture, and hydrates and preserves the chopped celery.

Storing Celery by Wrapping

Another way to store celery is to wrap it in aluminum foil or paper towels.

Wrap Celery in Aluminum Foil

First, remove the end of the celery bunch, so the stalks separate from each other.

Then, chop the celery stalks into the desired shape you want.

After that, wrap the cut celery stalks in the aluminum foil.

Finally, place the wrapped celery in the refrigerator.

Notes:

  • Before starting these steps, ensure the celery is completely dry.
  • Plastic bags don’t work in this way because the ethylene gas can’t get out, which causes the celery to rot.

Wrap Celery in Paper Towels

If you don’t have aluminum foil, you can wrap celery in paper towels.

First, remove the end of the celery bunch, so you have the stalks separated from each other.

Then, chop the celery stalks into the desired shape you want.

After that, dampen the paper towels and wrap the cut celery stalks in the paper towels.

Now, place the wrapped celery into a large plastic zip-lock bag and seal it.

Finally, place the wrapped celery in the refrigerator.

How to Store Celery in Freezer?

First, cut off the root of the celery, and rinse the celery body under cold running water to remove all the dirt and sand.

Second, chop the celery into the desired shape you want.

Now, blanch the celery by submerging it in boiling water for about three to five minutes.

After that, chill the celery by soaking it in an ice-cold water bowl. This will allow the blanching process to complete.

Then, drain off the extra water.

Finally, put the celery in a freezer bag or an airtight container to freeze it, and put the celery bag in the freezer.

How to Store Celery Leaves?

If you don’t want to use the leaves immediately, store the leaves separately as follows:

First, remove celery leaves out have yellowed or browned.

After that, wash and dry the remaining celery leaves.

Then, put the leaves in an airtight container with a damp paper towel.

Finally, put the airtight container in the fridge.

Notes:

  • To keep the celery leaves even longer, puree them with a small amount of water or oil, and freeze them in ice cube trays.
  • Add a cube to soups, stews, and sauces whenever you want a pleasant flavor.

How to Store Celery Juice?

If you want to consume your juice within 24 hours, then store it at room temperature. Keep it in an air-sealed container immediately after you prepare it. Make sure that you fill the jar to the top to prevent air explosions that spoil the juice.

If you want to keep it fresh for longer than 1 day, then store your celery juice in the fridge in a sealed container.

To keep celery juice fresher, add lime or lemon juice to boost your drink with vitamin C.

Tips and Tricks

  • When purchasing celery, look for celery with straight, crunchy, and rigid stalks, and fresh leaves. It should appear as if it were just picked, firm, and unwilted.
  • Discard any celery that has visible blemishes or rot, or if its leaves have yellowed or browned.
  • Avoid storing celery in plastic bags because excessive moisture will cause the leaves to rot.
  • Plant the celery sprouts when you cut off their base. Celery grows very fast!
